VideoTeaching.Com :: Musings
Thoughts from ChurchCrunch about Videoteaching.com:
The “About” page lists a number of reasons why one might use these videos, which include Expanding Your Teaching Team, Developing Your Ministry, Helping a Ministry during a Transition, or Taking a Break. One could wonder, though, if everyone agrees (will agree) with this philosophy of ministry, i.e. letting a video take the place of someone physical to preach to their flock and congregation.
I speak out of experience, as I was a part of one congregation many years ago where the Senior Pastor “took a break” for the summer and let some material from another well-known Pastor be shown in his stead via video. The congregation was instantly split over this strategy and we never completed the series.
In addition, I think you could probably conjure up the same issues that have been poised at the multi-site churches and video-venues, but I think it’s worth consideration instead of blindly leveraging the videos for your ministry.
I am not exactly against video teaching. Actually, I am a pretty strong proponent towards using it in multi-site strategy, but I think that there is a point where we can use video teaching as a crutch inadvertently ignoring the training of young pastors. Young pastors need a seat at the table to learn how to preach and teach. While Sunday isn’t the only place to let this happen, it is more than likely where they might end up.
On videoteaching.com, I hope to see a greater mixture of pastors from the seeker driven to the intensely exegetical. I know I would totally use these videos to help teach in our small group. Especially if Driscoll puts the Peasant Princess series on there.
Honestly, I think that the arguments that surround video teaching are the same as those that surround podcasting. I am a guy who has been listening to the same pastor on podcast for four years. I get the majority of my bible teaching and growth through Matt Chandler of the Village Church in the Highland Village, Texas. I am also actively involved in the church I work at, and it is here that I get to work out the Kingdom in my life.
Are we putting too much stake into who or how someone is teaching us, while not spending enough energy and effort into unpacking how what we are learning unfolds into our day to day Kingdom living?
Live Radically + Change Lives :: Compassion
Lauren and I a few months ago sponsored through Compassion International a ten year old girl from Nicaragua. Her name is Kenia. We have since received a letter and a beautiful drawing from Kenia.
Since we adopted Kenia we have applied to become Child Advocates because we believe so much in the mission of Compassion.
“Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.” – Compassion.org
As an Advocate we get to participate in finding people to sponsor a child for 32 dollars a month.
32 Dollars…
With this comes education, food, and spiritual growth.
What do I loose? Maybe a new cd, a half a tank of gas, and one less coffee a week.
We live in so much excess, but we can make a difference with a little bit of intentional giving. If you are interested in sponsoring a child you can contact me through the contact information above, or you can just go to Compassion directly.
